Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has announced the construction of 1,000 housing units to support those impacted by the Akosombo Dam spillage.
At a press conference in Accra on September 30, he reaffirmed the government’s dedication to easing the struggles of displaced individuals.
Oppong Nkrumah shared that the project’s second phase, which will add 1,010 more units, has been approved and is set to move forward, with the necessary commencement certificate already in hand.
The government is currently finalizing processes with the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and completing land acquisitions to kick off construction for this phase.
“Currently, 115 housing units are under construction and have surpassed the 60 percent completion mark.
These are the units I broke ground for in April 2024,” he noted.
The Akosombo Dam spillage, which took place on October 15, 2023, severely impacted communities in the Lower Volta Basin, affecting around 88,000 individuals and destroying over 5,000 homes. Nearly a year later, many victims are still displaced.
