Thirty-nine individuals arrested during a weekend protest led by the Democracy Hub have been remanded by the Accra Circuit Court.

The protest, which lasted three days, raised concerns over illegal mining (galamsey) and economic mismanagement.

The arrested protestors face charges including unlawful assembly, conspiracy to commit a crime, causing unlawful damage, and offensive conduct.

Among the groups remanded, the first batch of ten protestors pleaded not guilty, and their case is adjourned to October 8, 2024.

Another group of nine protestors also pleaded not guilty and will reappear on the same date. An additional group of 11 was also remanded to police custody with a similar court date.

In a separate case, nine more individuals were remanded with a hearing set for October 11, 2024.

During the proceedings, a bench warrant was issued for one person who failed to appear. The arrests followed clashes between the demonstrators and police at the 37 Roundabout in Accra.

Lawyer and social media figure Ama Governor was among those arrested, making headlines for her call to “emancipate yourselves from mental slavery” while being escorted to court.

The convenor of Democracy Hub, Oliver Baker-Vormawor, is set to appear in court on Wednesday, keeping public attention on the ongoing protests and their legal repercussions.
