At least six people were killed after a four-story hostel caught fire in the early hours of Tuesday in the capital of New Zealand. Others ran for their lives, some were snatched from the roof, and others were injured.

According to New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, a hostel fire that started early on Tuesday in Wellington killed at least six people. At the same time, the city’s mayor claimed that the toll could be significantly higher.

Since the fire breakout, 80 firefighters and 20 trucks battled the blaze. Emergency services said many deaths occurred in the 92-room hostel, and 52 people were rescued.

Police ask anyone staying at the lodge and are safe to phone them at (855) 105-3321 or fill out an online form with Operation Rose in the subject line.

At this point, the fire is considered “unexplained” by the police, which means they will collaborate with the fire department to identify its origin.

According to Brendan Nally, deputy national fire and emergency services commander, there were no sprinklers in the building.

According to incident controller Mike Dombrowski, residents have been advised to stay indoors with their windows and doors shut owing to the smoke plume.
