Bagbin: I’ll Ensure Tax On Sanitary Pad Is Scrapped<span class="wtr-time-wrap after-title"><span class="wtr-time-number">1</span> min read</span>

The Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin says he will be taking immediate action to ensure the scrapping of the law that imposes a tax on sanitary pads.

Alban Bagbin raised concerns over the issue when he acknowledged receipt of a petition presented by a group calling itself ‘Socialist Movement of Ghana’ to remove taxes on sanitary pads.

The over 20% levy exists because sanitary pads are categorised as luxury products according to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) guidelines.

However, speaking on the floor of Parliament, Bagbin said the taxes on sanitary pads must not appear in the next budget statement.

“The House should not have allowed it at all, you know the impact of that law on the human resource development of this country? It’s immeasurable, that is why I suspended sitting and had to attend to them (protesters).”

“I have a copy of the petition, and I will take immediate action to prevent whoever is a minister proposing that thing to take it off, the next budget it must not appear. It cannot be a tax, please I take a very serious view on this matter,” Bagbin said.
