Bawumia Convenes Strategic Meeting with NAPO and Chairman Wontumi Ahead of Running Mate Endorsement1 min read
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has paved the way for the endorsement of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, as his running mate for the upcoming December 7 elections. This endorsement follows consultations where President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the NPP Majority in Parliament accepted Dr. Opoku Prempeh.
Prior to presenting his running mate to the party’s National Council, Dr. Bawumia held a crucial meeting on Sunday evening with Dr. Opoku Prempeh and Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, commonly referred to as Chairman Wontumi. The meeting aimed to resolve any differences and strategize for the future.
The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, confirmed on June 28, 2024, that the parliamentary caucus fully supports Dr. Bawumia’s choice of NAPO as his running mate. He mentioned that after extensive engagements with the party leadership, it is likely that the National Council will finalize this decision soon.
“In our discussions with Dr. Bawumia, he expressed his preference for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running mate. The caucus supports this choice, pending the official confirmation at the national council meeting,” stated Mr. Afenyo-Markin.
He further elaborated, “We have engaged with Dr. Bawumia on this decision, and the feedback from caucus members has been positive. It seems there will be a consensus at the upcoming meeting, especially considering the favorable response from the President.”
With these developments, all indications suggest that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is set to join Dr. Bawumia in leading the NPP into the 2024 elections.
