MTN Ghana marked a significant milestone in the country’s financial landscape as it celebrated 15 years of its Mobile Money (MoMo) service.

The event, themed “Empowering Communities, Celebrating 15 Years of Progressive Financial and Digital Inclusion,” underscored the platform’s transformative impact on the lives of millions of Ghanaians.

Mr. Nii Adotey Mingle, General Manager in-charge of Northern Business Sector, advised MoMo users to protect their PIN anytime, anywhere.

He quickly cautioned MoMo users to desist from sharing their PIN saying it is not a healthy thing to inculcate.

“When you have not purchased anything and there’s a pop up on your phone to enter your PIN, don’t enter it because you will be entertaining fraud,” he stressed.

Mr. Nii Adotey Mingle highlighted the pivotal role of MoMo in driving financial inclusion.

He emphasized the service’s ability to bridge the gap between the banked and unbanked, particularly in rural areas where traditional banking services were previously inaccessible.

“When we embarked on this journey 15 years ago, the financial landscape was vastly different,” Mr. Mingle noted. “MoMo has been instrumental in democratizing access to financial services, empowering individuals, and transforming businesses.”

The celebration also underscored the challenges faced by the industry, with fraud identified as a major obstacle. MTN reiterated its commitment to investing in robust security measures and collaborating with stakeholders to protect customers and foster trust.

“Beyond its core function of sending and receiving money, MoMo has evolved into a comprehensive financial platform offering a range of services including loans, insurance, international remittances, and investments. This expansion has further solidified its position as an indispensable tool for individuals and businesses alike.”

Mr. Mingle emphasized the importance of partnerships in driving the success of MoMo. Collaborations with regulatory bodies, financial institutions, and other stakeholders have been instrumental in creating an enabling environment for the service to thrive.

As MTN looks ahead, it recognizes the need to address ongoing challenges such as network coverage gaps, particularly in rural areas.

The company is committed to investing in digital infrastructure to expand connectivity and enhance customer experience.

The 15-year anniversary of MoMo serves as a testament to its transformative power and MTN Ghana’s dedication to financial inclusion.

As the service continues to evolve, it is poised to play an even more significant role in shaping Ghana’s economic future.
