Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, the MP for Effiduase-Asokore, has clarified that his comments on the government’s stance regarding small-scale mining were taken out of context, igniting a backlash.

The controversy began with a campaign video from September 27, which implied that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would not enforce a ban on small-scale mining. Afriye argues that his words were misrepresented, sparking outrage from advocacy groups urging the government to crack down on illegal small-scale mining, known as “galamsey,” due to its significant environmental impact.

In a September 30 interview, Afriye emphasized that his original message was misreported. He highlighted the distinction between responsible and harmful small-scale mining practices.

“The TV3 report cut my statement short, making it seem like I was saying we wouldn’t take action against galamsey, which misrepresents my position,” he explained.

“I believe we cannot impose a blanket ban on small-scale mining; it’s not fair to responsible operators. Just as we wouldn’t ban all fishing because some use illegal methods, we need to address the irresponsible practices without punishing all.”

Meanwhile, organized labor plans to meet on October 1, 2024, to discuss potential actions, including a nationwide strike or protest, in response to the government’s inaction on demands for a total ban on small-scale mining to tackle illegal operations.
