The Ghanaian government has expressed its discontent over Organised Labour’s decision to go ahead with a nationwide strike set for October 10, following a recent meeting aimed at addressing illegal mining known as galamsey.

Organised Labour has been advocating for the president to declare a state of emergency regarding illegal mining and to implement sustainable solutions to tackle the issue.

In a statement on October 7, Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar conveyed surprise at Organised Labour’s determination to strike, especially considering the government’s commitment to combat illegal mining.

Additionally, the government supports initiatives for presidential candidates to endorse a pact against illegal mining and plans to repeal the Environmental Protection Regulations 2023 (L.I 2462) when Parliament reconvenes.
