Ghana Health Service Confirms Cholera Cases in Ada Districts

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed a cholera case in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra region, first reported on October 4, 2024.

In a statement issued on October 14, the GHS announced the activation of public health emergency management committees at district, regional, and national levels. As of October 11, a total of nine cholera cases have been confirmed across Ada West and Ada East.

Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the GHS Director-General, revealed that a joint Public Health Emergency Rapid Response Team (PHERRT) has been established, comprising representatives from national, regional, and district agencies, including the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Additionally, an ‘Alert’ has been sent to health facilities nationwide, with ongoing efforts for contact identification, tracing, and follow-up. Investigations into the outbreak are underway, and healthcare workers in the affected regions have been trained on cholera case definitions, sample management, and treatment protocols.

“Daily active community case searches are being conducted,” Dr. Kuma-Aboagye emphasized, highlighting the enforcement of strict Infection Prevention and Control measures in all health facilities. He reassured the public that the Ministry of Health and GHS will continue to work diligently with partners to swiftly address public health emergencies in the country.
