A Complete List Of All The Royals Confirmed To Attend King Charles’s Coronation4 min read
One of the biggest royal events of 2023 will be King Charles’s coronation on May 6, 2023. On the first Saturday in May, King Charles III will be crowned alongside Camilla, Queen Consort in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Royalty from around the world is expected to be in attendance. Here’s who has confirmed their attendance at the coronation thus far:
British royals
Though Buckingham Palace has not officially confirmed the list of royals who will be at coronation, likely, the entirety of the British royal family will be there. That includes Charles’s three siblings, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward, along with his son, Prince William, and daughter-in-law Catherine, Princess of Wales.
Prince Harry will attend, but Meghan, Duchess of Sussex will not. The Palace said in mid-April they are “pleased to confirm that The Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey on May 6th. The Duchess of Sussex will remain in California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.”
Monaco
Prince Albert and Princess Charlene were the first foreign royals to say they will be at the coronation. Albert told People, “I’m certain that it’s going to be an incredible ceremony and a very moving one. We’ve maintained contact since His Majesty became King, but I haven’t talked to him personally since the Queen’s funeral. I’m certain His Majesty will add his own ‘personal touches’ to the ceremonies. But what those will be, I’m sure I don’t know.”
Ghana
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and his wife, Lady Julia, will attend the coronation, Manhyia Palace confirmed. Osei Tutu II is the Asantehene (the title for monarch, or king) of the Ashanti people.
Japan
Japan’s Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko will attend the coronation, the Imperial Household confirmed in early April. The Prince and Princess will stay at Claridge’s, a luxury hotel in Mayfair. King Charles attended Akishino’s father Emperor Naruhito’s enthronement ceremony when he ascended to the Chrysanthemum Throne in 2019, and when Emperor Akihito ascended to the throne in 1990.
Denmark
Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary will represent the Danish royal family at King Charles’s coronation. Queen Margrethe, who was close with the late Queen Elizabeth, will not attend.
Sweden
King Carl XVI Gustaf and his daughter, Crown Princess Victoria, will attend the coronation on behalf of Swedish royals.
Spain
King Felipe and Queen Letizia will be in attendance on behalf of the Spanish royal family.
Norway
Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit confirmed they will be going.
Luxembourg
Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa will be at the coronation of Charles and Camilla. It follows a big week for them—their daughter, Princess Alexandra, just got married.
Greece
Members of the former Greek royal family—Queen Anne-Marie and Crown Prince Pavlos—will reportedly be at the coronation. To celebrate, Princess Marie-Chantal’s eponymous brand even launched special coronation merch.
Netherlands
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will attend the coronation on behalf of the Netherlands. At the reception at Buckingham Palace the night before, Princess Catharina-Amalia and Princess Beatrix will represent the Dutch royals.
New Zealand / Aotearoa
King Tuheitia and his wife, Makau Ariki Atawhai, will attend the coronation with the New Zealand delegation. “Our respective monarchies are enduring institutions that share a common commitment to stability and continuity and unity for all peoples,” Kingitanga (the Māori King Movement) chief of staff Archdeacon Ngira Simmonds said. “The Kingitanga will continue to hold the Crown accountable for its role as a partner to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.” (The Te Tiriti o Waitangi is New Zealand’s founding treaty, an agreement between Māori chiefs and the British Crown. And, Aotearoa is the Māori language name for New Zealand.)
Belgium
King Philippe and Queen Mathilde will be at the coronation, and at the Palace reception on May 5, King Philippe will be joined by his daughter, Princess Elisabeth.
Bhutan
Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema will attend the coronation.
Serbia
Though there is no longer a monarchy in Serbia, Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia will be attending the coronation.
Romania
The same goes for Romania: Though there’s no monarchy, Margareta, the Custodian of the Crown of Romania, and her husband, Prince Radu of Romania, will be in attendance.
Thailand
King Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida will be in attendance at the coronation. Thailand is one of the few other monarchies around the world that still have coronations; King Vajiralongkorn’s coronation took place in 2019.
Tonga
Tongan monarchs, King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau’u, will attend King Charles’s coronation. At Tupou’s coronation in 2015, Princess Anne attended on behalf of Queen Elizabeth. And, at Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953, Tonga’s Queen Sālote Tupou III attended.
