Adopting A Local Dialect As Our Official Language: It May Be Challenging But We Can Do It – Dr. Nana Anima Wiafe-Akenten<span class="wtr-time-wrap after-title"><span class="wtr-time-number">1</span> min read</span>
Lecturer and Founder of Kasa Tumi Language WatchFoundation, Dr. Nana Anima Wiafe-Akenten has affirmed that Ghana can adopt a local dialect as official language.

According to Dr. Nana Anima Wiafe-Akenten, it may be challenging but with determination and stakeholders consultation, the country can adopt a local dialect as its official language.

The former Head of Department of Akan-Nzema, University of Education, College of Languages Education’s statement comes at the back of Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin’s call for a concerted effort among stakeholders to formulate a national policy to adopt a local language as the country’s official language.

Speaking on Time FM’s Ama Ghana Morning Show, she said: “Adopting a local language as an official language, may be challenging, especially, financially, but with the will of government, mutual understanding and support of the natives, it can be done. It is feasible as has been done elsewhere and it is working.”

Dr. Nana Anima Wiafe-Akenten stressed that it is lucrative saying it has helped China, India , Germany and other countries.

Reacting to the English Proficiency Index in Africa, where Ghana was ranked 4th, she said if citizens can speak their native language well they can speak English well.
