AFAG Calls for Introduction of Continuous Voter Registration Exercise1 min read
Henry Asante, Vice Chairman of the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), has advocated for the Electoral Commission (EC) to implement a continuous voter registration system to alleviate the pressures experienced during limited voter registration exercises.
As the Electoral Commission commences its targeted voter registration campaign today, May 7, 2024, focusing on first-time voters and those seeking voter cards, Asante proposes a shift towards continuous registration to streamline the process.
The 21-day registration drive, announced by EC Chairperson Jean Mensa, aims to enroll approximately 623,000 new voters nationwide. With registration centers operating from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, there’s anticipation for a significant turnout.
Mr Asante highlighted the benefits of continuous registration, suggesting that it would address issues commonly encountered during limited registration exercises.
He emphasized the importance of enhancing birth and death registration systems to facilitate easier voter registration for citizens, allowing them to register soon after turning 18 at nearby offices.
Such a system, Mr Asante argues, would contribute to building a comprehensive and organized voter database for the country.
Additionally, Asante emphasizes the civic responsibility of individuals to register to vote, stating that it’s not solely the duty of political parties to educate and mobilize citizens for registration upon reaching voting age.
He further calls upon the EC to expand provisions for registration centers nationwide, ensuring accessibility for all eligible citizens.
