Afenyo-Markin Slams Bagbin for ‘Supervising Chaos’ and Undermining Democracy”1 min read
The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has sharply criticized Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to adjourn Parliament indefinitely, describing it as an act of “supervising chaos” that damages Ghana’s democratic credibility.
This came after Bagbin adjourned the House on Thursday, November 7, due to a lack of business, which was blamed on the absence of NPP members.
Afenyo-Markin clarified that the absence of NPP MPs was not due to negligence, but rather a procedural issue.
He explained that the Clerk of Parliament failed to print the essential Order Paper, which outlines the parliamentary agenda.
Without this critical document, the session could not proceed as planned, leading to the NPP’s inability to participate.
The Majority Leader also pointed out that the NDC’s claims about the Majority’s absence from a “Business Committee” meeting were unfounded. Afenyo-Markin, who chairs the Business Committee, emphasized that the recall session was intended to discuss matters already agreed upon, and there was no need for another committee meeting.
He accused Speaker Bagbin of failing to address the administrative lapse, ultimately undermining the integrity of the Parliament’s operations and the nation’s democracy.
