Baptism Under Threat: SDA Church Blames Galamsey for Contaminated Water1 min read
The Seventh-Day Adventist Church (SDA) has expressed serious concerns over illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, which is hindering its ability to baptize new members.
The church highlighted that the pollution of Ghana’s water bodies is negatively impacting its efforts to spread the gospel.
Pastor Edward Nyarkoh, Executive Secretary of the Northern Ghana Union of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, revealed that the church has had to create its own baptismal facility due to the widespread contamination of rivers.
He stated, “Galamsey has destroyed all the water bodies, affecting our baptisms. We used to baptize in rivers, but now they are all polluted. As a result, we’ve built this baptismal site to ensure the sanctity of the process.”
The issue of galamsey has gained significant attention recently, prompting numerous organizations and individuals to call for a complete ban on all mining activities.
In response, Organized Labour is planning a strike on Thursday, October 10, demanding immediate government action to address this pressing problem.
