The National Democratic Congress (NDC), the main opposition party in May, 2023 voted overwhelmingly to retain former President, John Mahama as its leader for the 2024 presidential election.

This is the third time Mahama will run for the top job. The 64 year old Mahama secured 297,603 votes, representing 98.9% of votes cast, according to the Electoral Commission.

This power from the party’s delegates, has not only given him the green light to campaign for the 2024 general elections but has boosted his appetite to run the affairs of the country when elected.

But have you pondered about the right person to pair Mahama in his bid?

Mytimefm.com has chanced on the potential list of persons likely to partner Mahama and this will surely blow your mind.

Monday, July 6, 2020, Mahama named former Minister of Education, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the 2020 general elections. But a group of persons still hold the view that the NDC could have performed better in the elections if he had settled on a male as a running mate – because of this Mahama may drop the former educationist.

About Naana Opoku-Agyemang

Professor Naana Opoku-Agyeman, a former Minister of Education, was born on November 22, 1951, at Cape Coast in the Central Region but hails from Komenda.

She attended Anglican Girls’ Secondary School at Koforidua and Aburi Presbyterian Girls’ School.

She had her secondary education at the Wesley Girls’ High School in Cape Coast from 1964 to 1971 where she was the School Prefect in her final year.

Former Foreign Affairs Minster Honorable Hannah Tetteh, quickly comes to mind if Mahama will be settling on a female as a running mate. Hannah Tetteh with her vast experience is expected to pull more numbers for Mahama which Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang could not magically garner.

About Hannah Tetteh

Hanna Serwaa Tetteh is a Ghanaian barrister and politician. She served in the cabinet of Ghana as Minister for Trade and Industry from 2009 to 2013 and Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2013 to 2017. She was also the Member of Parliament for the Awutu-Senya West constituency.

The second contender of the 4 strong men is the NDC Campaign Manager for 2020, Prof Joshua Alabi. He is of the view that Ghana is blessed to have former President John Dramani Mahama deciding to contest the 2024 presidential election again.

For him, the former President is not only coming to the presidency with a wealth of experience, he is “affable, good listener and a unifier.”

The name of the former Minister of Health, Alex Segbefia has also popped up as the 3rd personality to Mahama as his potential running mate. The Deputy Coordinator of the NDC’s Elections Planning Committee, is on record to have slammed critics who questioned John Mahama’s fundraising initiative for the party’s national congress.

The former Minister of Health said it is baffling how people are creating a wrong impression about the entire initiative because former president Mahama’s name pops up when money is being transferred to the MTN mobile money number provided in his official communication.

Mr Alex Segbefia who is also the Director of International Relations NDC has consistently attacked the Nana Addo-Bawumia government saying that the economy has moved from the ICU and “it’s nearing the morgue.”

How Mahama Became President

He came second to President Nana Akufo-Addo in 2016 and 2020.

The upcoming presidential vote is expected to be keenly contested. No party has ever won more than two consecutive terms.

The ruling NPP is due to pick its candidate later this year.
