The latest flood, according to officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), affected at least 1,500 locals.
Days of downpour coupled with an overflow from the Black Volta resulted in destruction to properties including 300 houses, schools and shops. Areas affected include Buipe Bridge, Zongo, R/C school, Buipe Bato and Ali Complex.
NADMO reaction
Speaking to Asaase News, the Central Gonja district director of NADMO, Nbonwura Mustapha said they are collaborating with other entities such as the Red Cross Society and the Ghana Education Service to find temporal structures for the affected persons.
“At the moment, three grinding mills have been submerged in water completely, shops and other businesses have been closed down due to the flood. So, the economic impact is very huge on the people as we speak,” Nbonwura said.
He expressed worry about the possible outbreak of water borne diseases such as cholera.
For his part, the district chief executive for Central Gonja, Iddrisu Salia Kamara said the government and other stakeholders are still in talks with the people about possible relocation as part of measures to find lasting solution to the recurring flooding in the Buipe community.
