The Ashanti Regional Command of the Ghana Prison Service is proposing immediate relocation of the Kumasi Central Prisons to decongest it.

Established in 1901 by the British colonial authorities to accommodate about 450 prisoners, the prison now houses around 1,917 inmates, the Ashanti Regional Prison Service Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Richard Bukari disclosed on the Ama Ghana Morning Show on Time FM 97.7 mhz in Kumasi.

Superintendent Richard Bukari lamented that the Central Prison is overcrowded saying the remand population is a burden to them.
