Dark Chapters of Ghana’s History: Obiri Boahen Exposes PNDC’s Deadly Legacy of 19821 min read
Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen, a former deputy general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has brought to light the atrocities committed by the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) during the early months of 1982.
According to Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen, under the leadership of the late President Jerry John Rawlings, the PNDC was responsible for the deaths of 208 Ghanaians, including 44 from the Ashanti Region.
Speaking on a local radio station, he detailed the violent history, mentioning victims such as Frankie Yaro, a brother of former President Hilla Limann.
His comments come in defense of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, who recently accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of various violent acts, including the murders of two pastors and a ritualist.
In a viral campaign video, NAPO alleged that the NDC was behind the killings of Prophet Asare, Brother Amoako, and Nana Drobo, who was known for his HIV drug development.
He also claimed the NDC had demolished mosques and warned Zongo residents of potential future demolitions if they supported the NDC.
Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen recounted further incidents of violence, stating that Joana Essien, a church member of Prophet Asare, was shot by the PNDC while bedridden.
He condemned both the PNDC and the NDC for their history of violence, declaring, “Violence is NDC, and NDC is violence.”
He urged President Akufo-Addo to address the nation and take action against the rising violence associated with the upcoming December elections, suggesting the deployment of soldiers to each constituency to maintain order.
