Election 2024: Mahama Promises Extended Two-Day Eid-ul-Fitr Holiday for Muslims1 min read
John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, has made a noteworthy commitment to the Muslim community in Ghana.
While campaigning in Gambaga and Nalerigu on October 2, Mahama promised to establish a two-day holiday for Eid-ul-Fitr if he is elected. This initiative aims to alleviate the difficulties faced by Muslims in fully celebrating the holiday, which can be affected by moon sightings.
Mahama’s pledge reflects his broader goal of supporting the religious practices of Ghana’s Muslim population, promoting an inclusive society for all citizens. He highlighted the significance of unity and fair representation for every Ghanaian, irrespective of their faith or background.
“We’re adding an extra day to the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration. Sometimes, confusion arises over moon sightings—some people break their fast one day, others the next. This additional holiday will ensure everyone has time to rest and celebrate,” he explained.
Mahama also expressed concern over unfinished projects from his previous administration, pledging to revive them and restore the nation’s economy if elected.
“Thank you, Gambaga and Nalerigu, for your warm welcome. I promise to work diligently to repair the economy and improve living conditions for all Ghanaians. It’s regrettable that projects initiated under my leadership have been left incomplete. We will resume these efforts and finish what has been started,” he stated.
Additionally, the Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has introduced a bill to amend the Public Holidays Act, proposing two additional Islamic public holidays: Tashreeq (after Eid-al-Adha) and Shaqq (before Eid-ul-Fitr). The bill is currently under consideration in Parliament.
