Energy Minister: Recent Power Cuts Not Planned Outages1 min read
Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempreh, addressed concerns about recent power outages, assuring Ghanaians it wasn’t planned load-shedding by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Causes of Outages:
- Local Overload: Increased population and businesses in some areas, like parts of East Legon, have strained existing power lines and transformers. Upgrades are underway.
- Power Plant Issues: An emergency at CenPower caused a sudden 40-megawatt loss, while planned maintenance at Amandi Power also contributed.
- Grid Management: Unforeseen outages requested by the national grid operator (GRIDCo) added to the disruptions.
Unplanned Outages:
Dr. Prempreh emphasized that the outages were mostly unplanned events, preventing ECG from implementing a pre-scheduled load-shedding program.
