First Son of Kwame Nkrumah Passes Away at 891 min read
Dr. Francis Nkrumah, the eldest son of Ghana’s inaugural president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has died at the age of 89.
His passing was confirmed by Indian author and editor Vijay Prashad, who announced the news on social media on Sunday, June 30, 2023.
“Dr. Francis Nkrumah (1935-2024) has just passed away. He was the eldest son of Kwame Nkrumah. He dedicated his life to pediatrics and was deeply cherished by his patients. Following the coup against his father, Dr. Nkrumah remained in Ghana, continuing his work as a physician and scientist,” Prashad wrote.
The editor of Inkani Books, publishers of the latest edition of “The Revolutionary Thoughts of Kwame Nkrumah,” referenced a foreword penned by Dr. Francis Nkrumah, where he honored his father, remarking, “I presently feel that Africa continues to miss [Kwame Nkrumah] unless we revisit what Nkrumah truly meant for Ghana and for Africa.”
Francis Nkrumah was Dr. Nkrumah’s eldest son, with his siblings including Gamal Nkrumah, Samia Nkrumah, and Sekou Nkrumah.
