The campaign fortunes of the Vice President and flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has received massive boost following reports that the former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has joined the campaign trail, few weeks to the crucial polls.

Videos surfaced on social media platforms on Monday in which the former Minister, who was also a leading contender for the NPP presidential slot was seen in a campaign bus together with Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia and other party bigwigs in the ongoing campaign tour of the Ashanti Region., bringing further joy and excitement to the teeming supporters of the ruling party.

Though he is said to be supporting in diverse ways, many had been wondering when the former Minister, who is credited with the successful Planting For Food and Jobs initiative during his reign as Food and Agric, would join the campaign and bring depth of poltical experience to bear on the Vice President and the NPP’s quest to achieve the unprecedented history of being the first party to break the 8 year electoral jinx.
Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto is known to have been a strong pillar behind the resilience and persevering spirit of the current President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo during the latter’s days as an opposition leader.

The former Agric Minister’s passion and commitment to the UP tradition, a party whose root is traced to his late father, Okyeame Baffour Osei Akoto, has never been in doubt and his presence in the campaign does not come as a surprise at all to many who have followed his political exploits from his young days.

Dr. Akoto Afriyie was the first candidate to concede defeat and throw his support behind the Vice President during last November’s presidential primaries in which he placed third.

He is fondly remembered for pioneering the popular Planting for Food and Jobs initiative which saw the revival of Ghana’s agricultural sector from negative growth in 2016 to an unprecedented 8.2% of GDP.
