Former Kotoko Captain Recounts Sad Memories Of May 9 Disaster1 min read
In a game against Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium, Ablordey led the Porcupine Warriors as they conceded two late goals which overturned the scoreline in favour of Hearts of Oak much to the chagrin of a section of Kotoko fans who got infuriated by the referees’ decisions.
The crowd resorted to throwing plastic seats and bottles onto the pitch which got police officers to respond by firing tear gas resulting in the death of 126 people.
Ablodey who now serves as the assistant coach to King Faisal says he always recounts the incident to his players anytime they play at the Accra Sports Stadium.
“Any pitch that I get on, I try to educate my players, probably if I have played there before. So any time I get to Accra Sports Stadium I remember [the incident].
“I stand at the exact place the incident happened to narrate to my players how it happened. I try to educate them on every pitch that I have played on here in Ghana.
“So when I get to Accra Sports Stadium, I educate them that this year I was the captain when we played Accra Hearts of Oak.” Godwin Ablordey told Radio Gold Sports.
