Four Tunisian troops died when an army helicopter crashed in the country’s northwest, President Kais Saied said Thursday, emphasizing the need “to reintroduce army equipment”.

In a statement, President Kais Saied, “Offering his deep condolences to the bereaved families, he said in a meeting with Minister for Defense Imed Memmiche that “the mishap cost the lives of four personnel”.

Earlier, the defense ministry said that the two bodies have been recovered from the sea. According to the ministry “communications have been lost with a helicopter which was making a night flight in the Cape Serrat area on Wednesday evening” with a crew of 4 aboard.

The Tunisian army has lost a number of aircraft in recent years. In October 2021, as many as 3 troops were killed when a military helicopter crashed in the province of Gabes. President Kais Saied spoke of “the need to renew army equipment” while emphasizing that this type of mishap occurs “in any nation”.
