Joseph Adom, a fifteen-year-old boy injured in a premix fuel explosion at Ngyirasia in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis, died on May 19, 2024. The explosion, which occurred around 4:00 PM on May 18, 2024, injured sixteen people.

Thirteen victims were taken to Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, while three were treated at Saint Benedict Hospital in Inchaban.

According to Hon Gabriel Ato Mensah, assembly member for Mempeasem-Ngyeresia, the explosion happened as fishermen were transporting premix fuel in gallons to their canoes.

“Due to the lack of a direct route to the beach, they often roll the barrels along the ground, and this time the fuel exploded, likely igniting from a nearby fish oven.”

The victims include 11 males and 5 females, with four in critical condition. The fire also damaged a Land Rover, an Opel Astra, and nearby wooden structures. Firefighters from the Western Region quickly brought the blaze under control.

Municipal Chief Executive Hon Abdul Mumin Issah has visited the victims.
