Galamsey Dilemma: MP Warns of Electoral Repercussions for Mining Ban1 min read
Kwaku Asante-Boateng, the MP for Asante Akim South, has voiced concerns that the government’s hesitation to address illegal mining, known as galamsey, is rooted in fears of losing seats in the upcoming December elections.
He pointed out that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) firm stance against galamsey in 2020 led to significant losses in mining communities.
In remarks to journalists on Wednesday, Asante-Boateng suggested that this current reluctance to impose a complete ban on mining reflects a broader political anxiety that could impact any party.
He defended the government’s cautious approach, emphasizing that the fear of losing voter support is especially acute in areas heavily affected by galamsey.
“We faced this issue before the 2020 elections,” he noted. “We lost all our parliamentary seats in the mining areas where we tried to enforce control.
“So, if we’re looking to ‘break the 8’ and constituents are calling for a ban, do you think the current government will risk implementing it again?
“The fear of losing power is what’s holding back a ban, and it’s a fear that could affect any political party.”
