German Club Terminate Anwar El Ghazi’s Contract Over Pro-Palestine Social Media Post1 min read
German Bundesliga club Mainz 05 announced the immediate termination of Anwar El Ghazi’s contract on Friday, citing comments and posts made by the player on social media related to the conflict in Israel and Gaza.
Last month, the club had initially suspended El Ghazi after he posted a social media story expressing support for the people of Palestine. However, Mainz 05 had subsequently lifted his suspension, allowing him to be available for selection after issuing a warning on Monday.
In response to the termination of his contract, El Ghazi posted on social media, writing, “Stand for what is right, even if it means standing alone. The loss of my livelihood is nothing when compared to the hell being unleashed on innocent and vulnerable in Gaza.”
