Ghana’s Minister of Communication and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has cleared the air regarding MTN’s involvement in the country’s 5G plans.

Concerns arose in May when the government announced a 5G rollout within six months, and MTN wasn’t listed among the companies forming the implementation consortium, Next-Gen InfraCo (NGIC).

Appearing on the Citi Breakfast Show, Owusu-Ekuful refuted claims of MTN’s exclusion, calling them “false alarms.” She emphasized that discussions are underway, and all network operators, including MTN, have the opportunity to invest in NGIC.

This clarifies the situation for industry experts who initially questioned MTN’s absence from the consortium.

The companies currently involved in NGIC are Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, along with local telecom operators AT Ghana and Telecel Ghana.
