Ghana’s Economy Needs an Upgrade, Not a Reset – Obiri Boahen Rebukes Mahama’s Economic Pledge1 min read
A former Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen, has criticized former President John Dramani Mahama’s plan to reset the Ghanaian economy.
According to Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen, Ghana’s economy is not something that can simply be reset like a wristwatch.
Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), reiterated during a brief video promoting the party’s 2024 manifesto launch that this initiative represents the first step toward resetting the nation’s economy. The manifesto launch, held at the University of Education, Winneba, was themed “Change to Reset Ghana.”
Mahama promised to revive the economy through a range of measures, including tax reforms, a national economic dialogue, and stabilizing the Ghana cedi.
He also pledged to investigate the current government’s “opaque gold-for-oil deal” and review the Gold Purchase Programme of the Bank of Ghana.
However, Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen responded in an interview by arguing that Ghanaians remember the economic difficulties under Mahama’s previous presidency.
He cautioned that Mahama’s reset plan could mean the cancellation of key initiatives such as free Senior High School, as well as nursing and teacher trainee allowances. Instead, Boahen emphasized the need for an upgrade to the economy, not a reset, suggesting that a Bawumia-led administration would build upon the current government’s progress.
Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen further criticized Mahama’s past leadership, accusing him of poor economic management, widespread corruption, and prolonged power outages that devastated businesses.
He argued that Mahama’s record shows he is not competent or trustworthy enough to lead Ghana again, praising Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a credible and capable alternative.
