Girona stunned Barcelona with a 4-2 victory at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, recording their first-ever win over the Catalan giants and moving to the top of the La Liga table.

The visitors dominated the first half, with Artem Dovbyk opening the scoring and Robert Lewandowski equalizing for Barca. Girona’s Miguel Gutierrez then scored a beautiful goal, driving into the open grass and finishing past Inaki Pena.

Barca increased their intensity in the second half, but their efforts were thwarted by the heroics of Paulo Gazzaniga in the Girona goal.

The visitors’ keeper denied Joao Cancelo and saved a curling effort from Ilkay Gundogan before Ferran Torres was introduced and added more threat to Barca’s attacks. However, it was Girona who killed the game off with two goals from substitutes.

First, Cristian Stuani flicked on a long ball for Valery to run onto and score, before Stuani himself delivered the final blow, nodding home a cross from Savinho. Gundogan did manage to score a consolation goal for Barca in injury time, but it was too little, too late.

The result marks a historic victory for Girona and puts them back on top of the table, two points ahead of Real Madrid and then seven points ahead of reigning champions Barcelona.
