Government Revokes FGR Bogoso and Prestea Mining Leases Amidst Public Outrage1 min read
In a significant move, the government has officially terminated the mining leases of FGR Bogoso Prestea Mining Limited, following recommendations from the Minerals Commission and the Attorney-General.
This announcement, made by Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Samuel Abu Jinapor on September 18, 2024, comes after FGR faced warnings in August 2023 regarding operational breaches that were not adequately addressed.
The decision was reached after thorough reviews of reports from the Minerals Commission and a dedicated Ministerial Committee, alongside extensive discussions with all relevant stakeholders.
This action aligns with ongoing protests from various groups, including the Ghana Mine Workers Union, which mobilized over 400 members to demand the lease termination due to poor working conditions and unmet financial obligations by the company.
Minister Jinapor emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to the responsible and sustainable management of Ghana’s natural resources, promising transparency and integrity in all operations for the benefit of the Ghanaian people.
