Journalist Physically Attacked For LGBTQ Support1 min read

Time FM’s senior reporter, Kwadwo Opoku Agyemang, has been hospitalized after an unknown group of men attacked him on his way home after work due to his open support for LGBTQ.

This happened on Tuesday evening 2nd May 2023 at about 19:00 GMT.

Mr Agyemang who is vocal on issues concerning human rights is believed to have on several occasions swayed from the opinions of the majority on discussions on LGBTQ.

It was during one of such discussions that he received threats from anonymous people on his stand that LGBTQ be legalized in Ghana.
Kwadwo Opoku Agyemang believes that since people are free to join any religion of their choice without fear of persecution, people of the LGBTQ community should be allowed to live freely.

This attack indicates that those threats made earlier should not have been taken lightly and measures should have been put in place to protect the journalist and other people whose views do not align with the views of the majority in the LGBTQ discourse.
Mr Agyemang has since reported the matter to the police awaiting the outcome of the investigations.

The issue of LGBTQ is a sensitive topic in the public discourse since the country’s three top religious groups (Christian, Islamic and Traditional) have all spoken against its legalization, making lives difficult for those with opposing views.

It can be recalled that the Church of Pentecost and some Christian leaders submitted a memorandum to parliament to express strong support for the anti-LGBTQ bill which was presented to parliament for consideration by the Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram Constituency, Sam Nartey George and six other members of parliament.

When this bill is passed into law, the activities of people in the LGBTQ community will be illegal.
