LIVE: King Charles’ Coronation underway – See Every Picture From The Historic Day4 min read
Later this morning, the King and Queen Camilla will have the eyes of the world on them as they are officially crowned in a historic ceremony.
While King Charles became monarch following the tragic death of Queen Elizabeth II in September, today’s ceremony will formalise the proceedings and will see him officially crowned King. As part of the ceremony, Camilla will also be crowned Queen.
In a break from tradition, the pair are travelling the procession route, which is also known as the King’s Procession, in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach which is a relatively modern horse drawn carriage.
The couple will travel in the carriage, which features air conditioning, electric windows and up-to-date suspension, for 1.3 miles in front of spectators who have lined the streets of London to catch a glimpse of the historic occasion.
Buckingham Palace previously revealed that the ceremony would “reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future” – a topic that has been of significant interest to the King as he looks to modernise the monarchy.
Indeed, while the ceremony will retain some historical elements that have been seen in Coronations dating back nearly 1000 years, some elements will be given a 21st century makeover.
For instance, the couple’s choice of transport is a departure from the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II who travelled in the Gold State Coach over a route which involved a 1.6 mile long outward procession and a five mile long inward procession.
However, speaking of the journey, the late Queen recalled her time in the coach as being “not very comfortable” and went so far as calling it “horrible”.
Instead, Charles and Camilla will only use the 260 year old Gold State Coach on their return trip which will be a reverse of their outward journey as they wave to the crowds, with the King wearing the Imperial State Crown.
During the service itself, King Charles and Camilla, Queen Consort will be joined at Westminster Abbey by 2,000 invited guests – another drastic difference from the last coronation which had roughly 8,000 people in attendance.
Among those in the Abbey to see Charles crowned King include Prince Harry who announced last month that he would be attending the coronation while Meghan Markle and their two children would stay in California.
After the ceremony, there will be another procession back to the Palace, where Charles and Camilla will be joined by family members including the Waleses for a historic balcony moment.
