John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reaffirmed his commitment to legalizing commercial motorbike operations, known as “Okada,” if he wins the 2024 presidential election.

The NDC’s previous plans to support the Okada business were interrupted by their defeat in the 2020 elections.

Speaking to motorbike riders in Ashaiman on May 31, 2024, Mahama emphasized that legalizing Okada is a key promise in the NDC’s 2024 manifesto. He criticized the current government for not fulfilling its promise to replace motorbikes with cars, describing it as deceitful.

“We had plans to legalize Okada, but losing the election prevented us from implementing it. Our opponents claimed it would lead to accidents and promised to replace your motorbikes with cars. Have you received any cars? It was all lies,” Mahama stated.

Mahama assured riders that their freedom would be secured when he takes office on January 7, 2025. He also expressed concern about the rising unemployment rate, which has increased from 8.5% in 2016 to 14.7% under the current administration. He noted that the Okada business provides employment for many, preventing the unemployment rate from soaring further.

Pointing to East African countries where Okada operations are legal and regulated, Mahama promised similar measures for Ghana. He pledged that the National Road Safety Commission would offer training to ensure safe riding.

Mahama urged motorbike riders to comply with future regulations and assured support for those needing licenses. “When we legalize Okada, you must follow the rules. Passenger safety is also important. We will help those without licenses to obtain them,” he said.
