Mahama Vows Zero Tolerance for Mining Among His Appointees1 min read
Speaking at the 3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-scale Mining at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani, Mahama emphasized the importance of his appointees focusing solely on their governmental duties for the country’s development.
Mahama stressed that his administration would implement a strict policy against any form of illegal mining, known as galamsey.
He assured the audience that he would establish a sustainable mining scheme in mining communities, distinct from the current system, which has been criticized for fostering corruption and environmental degradation.
Under Mahama’s proposed scheme, traditional leaders would play a pivotal role in the licensing process, aiming to ensure proper regulation and accountability.
Mahama went further, asserting that any minister, district chief executive, or official found engaging in mining activities would be required to resign from their position to pursue mining independently.
The former President’s stance underscores his commitment to combatting illegal mining and promoting responsible mining practices, signaling a significant shift in governance approach towards natural resource management.
