The Majority Leader, Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has responded to Speaker of Parliament, Right Hon. Alban Bagbin’s statement that the President got it tragically wrong for refusing to assent to three bills.

The President in his explanation for refusing to assent to the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill on Witchcraft, Death Penalty and the Armed Forces Amendment Bill explained that his decision is based on the potential financial impact on the state’s consolidated fund and a violation of Article 108 of the constitution.

According to President Akufo-Addo, after consultations with the Attorney General, he was advised that the Ghana Armed Forces Amendment Bill 2023 which is a private member’s bill sponsored by the Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu seeking to replace the death penalty with a life sentence has financial implications on the consolidated fund of the state due to the associated cost of incarceration.

Reacting to this on the Ama Ghana Morning Show on Time FM 97.7Mhz, Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said if Alban Bagbin doesn’t agree with the President it is not an issue of using offensive language on the President.

He told the host, Nana Kwabena Ampratwum that “if you don’t concur with the President, you equally express your opinion and don’t insult.”
