Kobbie Mainoo of Manchester United leaves the match with an injury during the pre-season friendly match against Real Madrid

Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo was forced off with an ankle injury in the early stages of the pre-season clash with Real Madrid.

Mainoo has been one of the stars of the US tour with Erik ten Hag trusting him in four of United’s five friendlies so far this summer. Chosen to play alongside Casemiro in central midfield, many saw tonight’s game as a chance for the teenager to prove his worth against top tier opposition.

However, Mainoo’s night ended prematurely with no more than a couple of minutes on the clock. The 18-year-old picked up an injury when Casemiro fouled Rodrygo leading to the Real man falling onto the young midfielder.

As the Real forward made his way back to his feet, it became clear Mainoo was in some discomfort as he remained on the turf. It appears the midfielder suffered an ankle issue with two physios helping United’s man leave the field.

While Ten Hag assessed whether Mainoo could return onto the pitch, Jude Bellingham gave his team the lead with a neat chipped finish over Andre Onana. Before the game could restart, the Reds made the decision to substitute teenager Mainoo with Christian Eriksen taking his place.

The transfer window is in full swing and United have already got their hands on two players, with Mason Mount and Andre Onana through the door at Old Trafford

Erik ten Hag’s attention now turns to signing a new goal scorer following their struggles in that department last season. Anthony Martial is the only genuine striker in United’s squad and his fitness can not be relied upon, so United are looking at Rasmus Hojlund and Harry Kane as options.

Our team of United experts will be on top of all the goings-on at United for the remainder of the summer window and beyond, and you can get the latest updates and inside information to your phone by joining our new free WhatsApp community below.

United will hope the injury to the teenager is not serious with the new Premier League campaign just over two weeks away. Ten Hag’s men face Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas at the weekend before heading back to England for friendly games with Lens and Athletic Bilbao.
