MTN Ghana Urges Users to Avoid Using Personal Information as MoMo PIN Codes1 min read
MTN Ghana has issued a strong warning to mobile money users about the risks of using their date of birth or mobile phone numbers as MoMo PIN codes. The warning came during an anti-fraud campaign held in Accra, aimed at educating users on how to protect their accounts from fraud. The company is encouraging customers to select more secure PIN codes to enhance the safety of their MoMo accounts.
Rena Ankrah, Manager for AML-CFT and Head of Fraud at MTN Ghana, highlighted the vulnerability of using easily guessable information for PINs. “If fraudsters gain access to your phone and see that your PIN is your date of birth or mobile number, they can easily breach your account. We strongly recommend creating more secure MoMo PIN codes,” Ankrah advised.
The campaign, known as the “MTN MoMo Fraud Roadshow,” marks the 15th Anniversary of MTN Mobile Money in Ghana. It underscores MTN’s dedication to customer security and fraud prevention. Ankrah noted that fraudsters are employing increasingly sophisticated techniques and urged customers to stay alert, particularly against using easily guessed information for PINs.
Ankrah also addressed a common scam where fraudsters deceive customers into believing they have won a prize from MTN. She clarified that MTN will only contact prize winners through official channels and will require them to visit a local office to claim their rewards.
Customers are advised to be wary of communications from other numbers, as these are likely attempts at fraud. MTN Ghana will only reach out through its official number, 0244300000.
