The Ashanti Region, a stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), will host the official unveiling of Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
This announcement was made by NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, known as Nana B, via a Facebook post. However, he did not include details of the event such as the time and venue.
On July 1, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, officially submitted the name of the Minister for Energy and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), as his preferred running mate for the upcoming 2024 elections.
According to report the NPP flagbearer presented NAPO to the National Executives of the party on Monday, July 1, 2024, at the party’s headquarters in Accra.
The Vice President also met with the Majority Caucus of Parliament earlier on Monday and officially informed them of his decision to pick the Energy Minister as the party’s vice-presidential candidate.
Speaking in an interview with Joy News, the Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, confirmed that the Vice President has presented NAPO as his running mate to the National Executives.
He said that the next step is for the National Executive Council of the party to approve NAPO’s nomination.
“Indeed, His Excellency, the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, and the incoming President for the Republic of Ghana, on January 7, 2025, visited the national headquarters of the New Patriotic Party to present the name to us officially, which formed part of the processes of nominating and affirming the running mate to the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer.
“So, we’ve received it, and the General Secretary, in consultation with the National Chairman, has issued an invitation for a National Council meeting, which is the appropriate body to determine the advisability of this name that has been submitted to us,” he said.
The party added that an emergency meeting is scheduled for July 4 to finalize the decision.
