Nungua Traditional Council Defends Marriage of 12-Year-Old Girl to High Priest, Cites Religious Parallels1 min read
The Nungua Traditional Council is defending the controversial marriage between Gborbu Wulomo-Shitse, Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII, and a 12-year-old girl, Naa Okromo (now Naa Ayemoede). Elders argue the practice is rooted in tradition and dismiss critics’ concerns as ignorant.
The Mankralo of Nungua, Nii Bortey Kofi Frankwa II, addressed the controversy at a press conference. He urged critics, who have called for intervention from the Ministry for Gender, Children and Social Protection, to learn more about the tradition before judgment.
Frankwa compared the marriage to religious figures like Mary and Joseph, implying acceptance of age differences in other faiths. He challenged critics to address similar practices within their own religions before criticizing the Nungua tradition.
The marriage sparked outrage due to the bride’s age, which violates Ghana’s legal marriage age. Reports indicate Naa Ayemoede’s duties include procreation, but Frankwa deflected questions about consummation, stating it’s premature.
The Council maintains the marriage upholds tradition and won’t hinder Naa Ayemoede’s education. They claim she’s been groomed for this role for six years, participating in rituals and festivals.
