Organised Labour Prepares for Landmark Protest Against Galamsey1 min read
Organised Labour is set to convene on Tuesday, October 1, to finalize plans for a nationwide demonstration against the government’s inaction on illegal mining, known as galamsey.
Multiple unions and associations have signaled their intent to protest if the president does not declare a state of emergency regarding the ongoing destruction of rivers and forests caused by illegal miners.
In an interview on Sunday, September 29, Abdul Moomin Gbana, General Secretary of the Ghana Mine Workers Union under the Trades Union Congress, emphasized that the meeting will clarify their next steps.
“The leadership of Organised Labour will meet on Tuesday to review recent developments and solidify our position moving forward,” he stated. “I believe we will stand firm on our original protest plans and the demands we’ve made to the president.”
Mr. Moomin Gbana criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his lack of public comment during the GJA awards night on September 28, suggesting that the president may be overwhelmed by the galamsey crisis or unwilling to address it adequately.
“It seems the President is either giving up on the fight against illegal mining or trying to signal that we cannot challenge him. Regardless, Organised Labour remains committed to this struggle.”
