Parliament Approves Gertrude Torkornoo As Chief Justice1 min read

Parliament has approved the nomination of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as the next Chief Justice.

This comes after the house concluded its debate on Wednesday, June 7, after the Appointments Committee submitted its report.

Both sides of the house agreed she possessed the qualifications necessary to serve as Chief Justice.

Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu, called on the Chief Justice-nominee to uphold fairness in the administration of justice.

He emphasized the significance of discharging her duties impartially, free from any political influence, and in accordance with her judicial oath.

Mr Iddrisu also acknowledged Justice Araba Essaba Torkornoo’s progression from the High Court to the Court of Appeal, stating that her nomination as Chief Justice was a natural advancement in her career.

He expressed his support and well wishes for her tenure.

Governs Kwame Aybodza, the Minority Chief Whip, urged Justice Torkornoo to surpass the performance of her predecessor, Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, as he left behind a legacy of miscarriages of justice.

President Akufo-Addo nominated Justice Torkornoo in April 2023 to succeed Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, who retired on May 24.
