Akua Donkor, the founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has died at Ridge Hospital in Accra. The circumstances of her passing have not been revealed.
A family member confirmed her death on Tuesday, October 29, stating she passed away on Monday, October 28.
Known for her passionate advocacy for farmers and women’s rights, Akua Donkor was a vibrant figure in Ghanaian politics. Her bold and outspoken style made her a recognizable presence, as she tirelessly championed the needs of grassroots communities.
Throughout her political career, Donkor ran for the presidency several times, undeterred by financial constraints. She was listed as a candidate for the 2024 presidential election, marking her as a significant player in the electoral landscape. Her death signifies the end of a remarkable chapter in Ghana’s political narrative.
Donkor’s political journey began when she was elected as the Assemblywoman for Herman. Her first presidential bid in 2012 ended in disqualification by the Electoral Commission, which cited eligibility issues. Despite her disagreement with the ruling, she chose not to challenge it legally and instead supported Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).
In 2016, she faced another setback when her party’s headquarters in Kabu, Eastern Region, was destroyed by fire, leading to her disqualification once again.
