Residents of Bunso in Ghana’s Eastern Region are facing power outages after thieves stole a transformer belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) last week.

The stolen transformer, valued at GH¢71,000, supplied 100kVA of power. It was located near the Bunso Police Station, adding a layer of surprise to the crime.

The transformer’s disappearance, from land belonging to the CSIR- Plant Genetic Resources Research Institute, raises concerns about the audacity of the thieves who acted despite the proximity of security personnel.

The incident has caused frustration for residents and businesses in the area. ECG is currently working to replace the stolen transformer, but the process is likely to take time, leaving them without power.
