President Akufo-Addo Inducts New Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo Into Office1 min read
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday, June 12, 2023, sworn in Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo as the new Chief Justice of Ghana.
Justice Gertrude Torkonoo’s swearing-in comes after the Parliament of Ghana approved her nomination by President Akufo-Addo on June 7, 2023.
She succeeded Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, who retired from the position on May 24, 2023.
The inauguration was done at the Jubilee House.
Justice Torkornoo is the third appointment to the office of Chief Justice since Akufo-Addo became president in 2017.
She is also the third female Chief Justice in the history of Ghana, following in the footsteps of Justices Georgina Theodora Wood and Sophia Akuffo.
In his address, President Akufo-Addo said the choice of Gertrude Torkonoo as the new Chief Justice was not a difficult one to make.
He said in view of her qualification, the number of years served at the superior court of judicature made the nomination easy.
He noted that Justice Gertrude Torkonoo will be an effective leader of the Judiciary.
“I have no idea Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo will be a worthy fit for her jurisdiction,” he said.
President Akufo-Addo urged the members of the bar and the colleagues at the bench to offer their unflinching support to the new Chief Justice.
