Teachers Return To Classroom As Court Ends Strike1 min read
Teachers will be heading back to classrooms after a High Court injunction effectively ended their nationwide strike on Thursday, March 28
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) launched the strike on March 20th to protest unresolved issues concerning their working conditions. These included unpaid salaries, unilateral changes to school schedules, and delays in receiving promised laptops.
The National Labour Commission’s efforts to mediate a solution proved unsuccessful. However, the High Court’s intervention on Thursday brings relief to students, parents, and schools who faced over a week of disrupted classes. Schools can now resume normal operations, though the impact on learning may necessitate additional measures to ensure students catch up.
While the immediate crisis is averted, the underlying issues raised by the teacher unions remain unresolved. It’s unclear if the government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission will address these concerns to prevent future disruptions.
This development offers a chance for both parties to come together and find a solution that ensures quality education for students while also addressing the needs of their teachers.
