The Ashanti Regional Veterinary Officer, Dr Mabel Abudu says rabies in people is 100% preventable through prompt and appropriate medical care.

Dr Abudu cautioned that people affected by the virus should not seek self-medication.

Earlier this month, an 8 year old boy was mauled to death by two bull dogs.

The dogs were later identified to be  rabid dogs.

Just last week, another boy was reportedly killed after bites from a rabies dog.

Speaking on the Ama Ghana Morning Show on Time FM she said the first thing a person bitten by an infected dog needs to do is to wash the affected area with water.

“The person should report to the nearest hospital afterwards for treatment,” she told host, Kwame Koranteng.

She revealed that a person who has been infected with rabies experience headache and weakness in the body.
