The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is on a collision course with some chiefs in the Volta Region, accusing them of taking bribes to endorse the presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party, His Excellency Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Some supporters of the opposition party have taken to social media to launch scathing attacks on the integrity and credibility of the chiefs in the region who have chosen to support the ruling party due to the massive development ongoing in their areas.

During his regional tour, the Vice President received significant endorsements from traditional rulers, sending shivers down the spine of the opposition NDC, which touts the Volta and Oti Regions as their “political World Bank.”

Now, some members of the opposition party are accusing the chiefs of being influenced by the ruling party, alleging that the traditional leaders have taken substantial sums of money to declare support for the NPP.

They also questioned the intellectual capacity of these chiefs, claiming that the speeches delivered by them on separate occasions were drafted by the MMDCEs in their respective jurisdictions.

“Speeches read by Volta chiefs to praise Bawumia were drafted by NPP MMDCEs,” one NDC supporter, named Citizen Mat Johnson, posted on his Facebook page. He further alleged that each chief was paid GH₵ 50,000 as a reward for the endorsement.

According to a recent survey, the opposition NDC is rapidly losing ground in their strongholds of the Volta and Oti Regions. The recent accusations from some of their supporters that chiefs in the area are taking bribes to support the NPP could further exacerbate the electoral fortunes of the NDC in the upcoming elections.
