Voter Registration Violence Raises Alarm for December Elections – Peace Council1 min read
The National Peace Council has issued a stark warning, urging immediate action to quell the outbreaks of violence witnessed at specific registration centers during the ongoing limited voter registration process.
Highlighting the critical need for addressing these incidents, the council underscores the potential for a domino effect that could jeopardize the integrity of the upcoming December 7 elections if left unchecked.
In a statement, George Amoh, the Executive Secretary of the Peace Council, called upon the Electoral Commission to seize every opportunity to ensure the enrollment of all eligible voters.
The council’s concerns follow the Electoral Commission’s assertion that the violence accompanying the limited voter registration justifies its proposal for adopting the Ghana Card as the exclusive registration document.
The commission has identified instances of violence at certain centers, attributing them to challenges related to verifying the age and citizenship status of registrants. However, it believes such incidents could have been prevented if the Ghana Card had been the sole registration requirement.
George Amoh reiterated the imperative of leveraging existing avenues to register all eligible voters without exclusion due to administrative hurdles.
He emphasized, “Our primary concern should be containing and preventing the spread of such incidents to avoid any disenfranchisement. The Electoral Commission must persist in its established processes to ensure the inclusion of all rightful voters.”
