A 17-year-old form two student of Sekondi College, Jojo Okyere, met his untimely death in the sea, near the Essei Lagoon beach at Sekondi on Monday, May 1, 2023.

According to eyewitnesses, Joojo Okyere had ignored warnings by onlookers when he decided to swim, claiming he was not intimidated by the sea.

Joojo Okyere, a form two agricultural science and boarding student of Sekondi College, had gone to the Essei Lagoon at Bakado with some friends on Monday, May 1.

The sea moves into the Essei Lagoon when the tide is high. This is where many residents of Sekondi and beyond often swim. Assessing the high tide and dangerous weather, his friends had decided not to swim and advised Joojo to also not but he refused.

After some rituals were performed, Jojo’s body finally washed ashore in the early hours of Tuesday, May 2.

Ushma Ibrahim, the Assembly member for Asaminsido electoral area disclosed that information he had gathered indicates, Joojo Okyere for the past week had been swimming in the Lagoon, whiles his school was participating in the inter-school games competition at St. John’s school in Sekondi.

On Monday, May 1, Joojo had invited six of his colleagues to the beach but three of them changed their minds and returned to school.

Jojo’s body has been deposited at the Effia Nkwanta regional hospital mortuary for further investigations by the police.
